Music and Mood: 7 ways it affects Emotional States:
Music changes our mood in different ways: it brings mood to specific moods and generates different feelings. Music and mood has always been the combination that accompanies our existence.
A melody makes us relive emotions, moments from our past; its vibrations have direct access to our emotions.
These characteristics make music one of the main tools to whet our moods. A research on the psychology of music by John (2007) analyzed the ways in which people use music to control and improve their mood by interviewing eight teenagers from Finland.
Although this group of people is very small and specific, in reality, it has made it possible to draw up a really useful list on how musical pieces have functions on our mood and also perform a function of strategies to follow.
Music stimulates the mind. We can lift the mood by listening to songs before going out, to pass the time, while we hang out the laundry or do some work. It accompanies us on trips, while we read or surf the web
It revitalizes us in the morning and can calm us down in the evening.
Create strong sensations:
It can provide us with deep, exciting emotional experiences, especially during a live performance.
It takes our mind away from unpleasant thoughts, when we feel heartbroken, sad or angry it is always better to fill the silence by listening to something that makes us feel better! And even more so when we get bored.
Just like a bathroom drain! Its vibrations free us, cleanse us, eliminate bad sensations.
Encourages daydreaming, slips us into old memories, lets us explore the past.
Create common emotions, shared experiences, a connection to someone who is lost.
These seven strategies all aim at two objectives: to control and improve mood. The beauty of music is that it can accomplish more than one goal at a time. Lively, cheerful music can turn out to be a real diversion, something that makes us entertained and revitalized. Soul music, especially when we are feeling sad, is able to provide good relief, encourage mental work and discharge emotions. An infinite number of examples could be found!
Music as an anti-depression Therapy and More:
There have been many achievements by John. For example, it is shown that distraction is considered one of the most effective strategies for regulating mood. Music is used as an anti-depression therapy. Music has also been given a strong ability to create reflective states, or the tendency to see ourselves in a detached way and allow us a greater understanding of our emotions. Playing musical instrument can help you heal faster.
However, there is also a negative connection that John consider about music; in fact sad music could promote mental ruminations. It is an emotional state that, ironically, can lead to such meticulous thoughts as to lead to excessive convoluted reasoning.
However, John found that music increases the understanding of feelings, and allows us to understand what the emotions we feel are while listening.
And to conclude this article with a flourish, I can only dedicate a splendid ballad by John Miles entitled Music (of course!). Listen to it and I’d like to know what sensations it makes you feel…. Write me, I’m waiting for your comments!
