Meters are essential testing equipment for electricity. Therefore, we should use and maintain them properly in order to use them with the same efficiency that we used when we bought them from the store. Though there are nominal wear and tear that every other device is subject to, keeping meters and testing equipment perfect for a long time has its perks and its ways too.

It is necessary to keep test equipment in proper working condition because we don’t know when they will come in handy. Just like a proper set-up, adjustment, and operation of the instruments are essential, the maintenance of the equipment also forms an integral part of the story of a properly functioning equipment.

Measurements of both A.C. and D.C. voltage can be done with the help of a voltmeter.

With the help of ammeters, you can measure the magnitude of electrical current flow in an electrical circuit. Some of these instruments must be inserted in series with the circuit while messing D.C current.

These devices can generate calibrated voltages from zero to several thousand to test the integrity of the insulation on wiring, which is usually buried in the earth.

They help you have a graphic readout of parameters versus time. You can get units for recording voltages, currents, pressures, temperatures, light levels, etc. It is important to note here that some of these instruments are single-channel while others can measure multiple inputs. They are distinguished as indispensable instruments for monitoring a parameter over a period of time.

What are the precautions you need to keep in mind while using these instruments?

You must take care of while you are using these kinds of electrical instruments. This is recommended not only to keep the instrument in working order or test the circuitry properly but also to ensure proper safety while working.

Here are some general ground rules to manage meters and test types of equipment well:

  1. It is better to start by keeping the range switch at a value higher than what you expect to measure at the start of the process. Not doing so might also damage the instrument temporarily and in some cases, permanently as well.
  2. Next, you need to make sure that the multi-tester you are using is set in the right mode. If your mode set reads “AMPS”, then you shouldn’t begin the process because that might lead to the destruction of the meter and might also harm the operator.
  3. It is observed that many meters are destroyed while trying to measure voltage if the meter is set to measure resistance.
  4. If you can test voltages as well as to measure resistance in order to find a fault in a circuit with dangerous voltages on it, then it is always safe and recommended to switch the power off and go for the latter.
